Contemporary Art and The Religions Seminar
I taught a 100-200 level seminar course for undergraduate Visual Art majors as an assistant lecturer at University of Pécs, Hungary.
My responsibilities included:
- Developing the syllabus and curating course materials
- Designing and leading interactive in-class activities
- Presenting course material
- Supervising students' midterm and final projects
- Evaluating and providing feedback on students' classwork and art projects
This course examines the manifestation of religious and spiritual symbols and ideas in Western contemporary art. After clarifying key concepts that illuminate cultural changes in the relationship between art and religion in Western culture, we explore how religious content appears in contemporary visual art. Our analysis will be structured around the five categories proposed by James Elkins, professor of art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, supplemented with examples from contemporary artists. The course aims to provide an overview of how contemporary Western high art integrates elements from major world religions and various spiritual practices.
